What is a compot? To begin with, compot is short for 'community pot' which is a group of seedlings in a pot, usually of the same cross. Monsoon Flora Orchid Compots are a little more than that, but the basics are the same. All of the compots we offer on this website come from the same source: the flasks in our propagation laboratory produced as a result of our exclusive breeding program .
The above left is one group of our lighted shelves with thousands of baby orchids in flasks. On the right is a close up example of one of our paph flasks. We only pot up the contents of whole flasks into compots. In the lab we try to plant about 22 paphs or 25 phrags in the flasks. When these grow and are big enough to go into compot stage we remove the plants, agar and all and plant the whole thing in a 4" pot. Into the greenhouse it goes for as long as it takes for the new seedlings to become completely rooted. During their time in the greenhouse the agar slowly shrinks away and the plants roots grow beyond it into the potting mix. When well rooted the sturdy orchid seedlings are made available for sale. This technique has been by the far the most successful way to grow paph and phrag orchid seedlings, and we've tried many different ways.
